Under state statute Chapter 24, Article 13 NMSA 1978, it is Doña安娜县's,  responsibility to decently inter or cremate the body of any unclaimed decedent or indigent person.

Two years after death, Doña安娜县 will provide a final disposition for unclaimed cremains through a memorial burial service. The public burials are held annually at a local cemetery where everyone is welcome to attend. This program does not assist with funeral expenses nor donations, viewing or any other service at the funeral home or place of worship.

To receive cremains, claimant must reimburse Doña安娜县 the cost per cremation. 支付ment is only accepted in Money Order or Cashier’s Check payable to Doña County. Cash, personal check or credit card payments cannot be accepted.
